The Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockford is a member congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Association, the continental association that combines two traditions: the Universalist Church of America, which organized in 1793, and the American Unitarian Association which organized in 1825 - both of which trace their roots back to early Christian beliefs which were declared heresies.
The Association, which has its headquarters at 25 Beacon Street, Boston, MA, is composed of 1,036 congregations with a total of 148,000 adult members. Each congregation is democratic in polity and operation; they govern themselves. They unite in the Association to provide services that individual congregations cannot provide for themselves, such as hymnals, religious education curricula, and ministerial education.
The Principles and Purposes of the Association, as voted by the delegates to the General Assembly offer a clear statement of the core beliefs around which Unitarian Universalist unite, although they do not have the weight of a creed.
The Association is answerable to an annual General Assembly which is composed of delegates from the member societies. The current President, elected by the member societies in 1998 for a four year term, is Rev. William Sinkford.
The Association is divided
into 23 Districts for the providing of services to congregations. The Rockford
church is located in the Central Midwest District, which includes all of Illinois
and Wisconsin, plus parts of Michigan, Indiana, and Missouri. Click here for
