Religious Education
Our religious education program was created to support parents who are raising their children with an appreciation of liberal religious values. We hope our young people will:
  • become part of a caring, concerned religious community;
  • develop a positive self-image;
  • form a Unitarian Universalist identity by learning about our values, traditions, symbols, and celebrations;
  • explore great religious truths;
  • demonstrate a sense of social responsibility;
  • affirm our interdependence with the universe and our responsibility to cherish and care for the earth;
  • sense the excitement and joy of learning as a lifelong process.
Our religious education program encourages individuals of all ages to explore religious questions and ethical values in developmentally appropriate ways, apply the principles of our faith to their daily lives, develop friendships with fellow seekers, and learn from one another.

Want to learn more about us? Come see us in action on Sunday morning. Please feel free to contact our Director of Religious Education, Kelly Riney, with any questions you may have about our Children and Youth Programming.

What Happens on Sunday Morning?

Our Sunday morning religious education program for children and youth runs from 9:50—11:15. Three Sundays a month the children begin downstairs with worship in the Children’s Chapel. The fourth Sunday of every month the children begin upstairs in the adult worship and stay through the Story for All Ages, after which they go downstairs for a multi-age activity based on the 7th principle: “We believe we should care for our planet Earth.”

Children’s Chapel: 9:50-10:15

Young people in the Pre-K/K/1st through 4th/5th class start the day with Children’s Chapel worship in our Chapel downstairs.

Chapel begins with lively singing of traditional UU hymns, rounds, and other fun music brought to us by our wonderful children’s music director, Jack Armstrong.

The children’s worship in Chapel usually includes the following elements:
  • Singing
  • Chalice lighting and responsive song
  • Guided Meditation
  • Story
  • Responsive Reading
  • Offertory
  • Lighting the Leaving Lanterns and
  • Singing the children to their classrooms

Religious Education Classes: 10:15-11:15

Children go to their classrooms where they engage in the activities, stories, and fun of their age appropriate curriculums. There are opportunities for learning, reflection and sharing, and community building within the framework of a spiritually nourishing and emotionally nurturing environment.

Family Fellowship: 11:15-11:30

Parents are asked to retrieve their children from the classrooms at 11:15. Children will not be released with out a parent present. Families are encouraged to socialize and have refreshments in the Betty Jacobson Commons Area after R.E. programming ends.
