Religious Education

Our religious education program was created to support parents who are raising their children with an appreciation of liberal religious values. We hope our young people will:
  • become part of a caring, concerned religious community;
  • develop a positive self-image;
  • form a Unitarian Universalist identity by learning about our values, traditions, symbols, and celebrations;
  • explore great religious truths;
  • demonstrate a sense of social responsibility;
  • affirm our interdependence with the universe and our responsibility to cherish and care for the earth;
  • sense the excitement and joy of learning as a lifelong process.
Our religious education program encourages individuals of all ages to explore religious questions and ethical values in developmentally appropriate ways, apply the principles of our faith to their daily lives, develop friendships with fellow seekers, and learn from one another.

Want to learn more about us? Come see us in action on Sunday morning. Please feel free to contact our Director of Religious Education, Kimberlee Carlson, with any questions you may have about our Children and Youth Programming.
CHURCH SCHOOL REGISTRATION

Parents of all children in Sunday morning programming (infants - senior high) are required to complete a Registration Form, which can be obtained from the DRE or an R.E. volunteer leader or online here.

Like most programming at The Unitarian Universalist Church, our R.E. Program is offered without charge, supported by the entire congregation through our annual canvass. All families participating in our Sunday morning activities are expected to contribute to the church budget by making an annual pledge of support and volunteering in the R.E. Program in some capacity.

R.E. STAFFING

Our R.E. Program is a cooperative one, staffed almost solely by volunteers. Volunteers can take on short-term tasks-- such as helping with a special activity, subbing, or assisting in a class occasionally-- or assume greater responsibility, through joining a teaching team, being a youth advisor, or serving on the Religious Growth and Learning Committee. At the time of registration, parents are asked to indicate how they can be of help.

To those of you who do not have children in the R.E. program, we extend a special invitation to serve as a church school or youth volunteer. Please contact the DRE for details, and watch for specific needs announced in the church newsletter, Kairos.

What Happens on Sunday Morning?

Religious Education Classes During First Service
9:30-10:30 a.m.
Children may begin in the sanctuary at 9:15am and go to their classrooms after the story for all ages, at 9:30am. Or they are welcome to arrive at 9:30am and go directly to their classrooms. In their classrooms they will engage in the activities, stories and fun. There are opportunities for learning, reflection and sharing, and community building within the framework of a spiritually and emotionally nurturing environment. We do require that parents stay on church grounds when their children are present in church.

Worship
9:15 and 11:00 a.m.
Most Sundays we will be offering two worship services, one at 9:15 a.m. and the second at 11:00 a.m. Children and youth begin with their families in the sanctuary for the beginning of worship. After the story, children will have the opportunity to either leave the sanctuary for religious education at 9:30am or stay in the service with their families. At the 11am service after the story children seven and under may go to the Nursery or stay in the service with their families. Activity Clipboards are available in the sanctuary.

Nursery
8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Childcare is available in the Nursery for children ages newborn to four years old. Our childcare is provided by professional paid staff that are screened and background checked. At the 11am service, children seven and under may go to the Nursery.

One Service Sundays / Summer Fun
Late May through August, there is one worship service at 10am. On these Sundays the children and youth will meet downstairs for Summer Fun, a variety of multi-age activities.
