Christmas Carols December 11, 2002
Do you have a favorite Christmas carol? Here’s one of mine:
Angels we have heard on high,
Sweetly singing, o’er the plains.
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains...
We sing this carol, and several others, at church each year at our Christmas Candlelight services. Christmas is the only time of year when we sing exactly the same songs that people in other churches are singing.
Why do Catholics, Presbyterians, Baptists, and people in other Christian churches sing Christmas carols? They sing them because they love Jesus, who was their most important religious leader. They celebrate Christmas with the hope that they will remember Jesus in the year ahead, and that more people will hear about Him and follow His way to what is true and right.
Why do Unitarian Universalists sing Christmas carols? We sing them because they remind us of the miracle of babies and new life, the power of a good life (and a good story), and the wonderful things that can come from ordinary people on an ordinary day. We celebrate Christmas with the hope that we, like Jesus, can make our world a better place
Why do all of us, in our different churches, sing Christmas carols? We sing them because they fill us with joy, peace, faith, and good will. We sing them because we want to follow this “Christmas spirit” all year long.
I hope you and your family will join us at one of our candlelight services on Dec. 22 ( 5 or 7 PM). And come to our Christmas pageant at 10:00 that morning, (There will be no church school.) and you will hear some brand new carols:
Follow the star of the night
Star of wonder, star so bright
Offer your gifts, whatever they are
Be not afraid, follow the star
HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Colleen
